About Akbar’s Tomb (Sikandra)

Akbar’s Tomb is located in Sikandra, about 10 km northwest of central Agra. Emperor Akbar himself selected the site and started construction during his lifetime. After his death in 1605, his son Jahangir completed the structure in 1613.

The tomb reflects Akbar’s philosophy of religious tolerance and cultural integration. The architecture blends Islamic, Hindu, Jain, and Christian design elements, making it unique among Mughal monuments.

Architectural Highlights:

Massive southern gateway with four white marble minarets

Extensive charbagh (four-part) Mughal garden layout

Red sandstone exterior with geometric and floral patterns

Intricate marble calligraphy and inlay work

Peaceful garden complex with deer and peacocks

Unlike later Mughal tombs (like the Taj Mahal), Akbar’s Tomb has a pyramidal, multi-tiered design rather than a central dome.
