Wildlife SanctuaryLocated right at the point where the Yamuna River flows from Delhi into Uttar Pradesh, the Okhla Bird Sanctuary covers about 4 km² of wetland habitat. The sanctuary consists of marshlands, open water bodies, and scrub/grassland areas created by the damming of the Yamuna for the Okhla Barrage.
The sanctuary supports a rich assemblage of birdlife — over 300 confirmed bird species have been recorded, including many waterbirds, waders, and woodland species. During the winter months (October–March), the site becomes especially vibrant as migratory birds arrive from Central Asia and beyond, offering birders and photographers great viewing opportunities.
Okhla Bird Sanctuary is one of 15 bird sanctuaries in Uttar Pradesh and has also been recognised as one of India’s Important Bird Areas (IBAs).
